A MAN who stole a BMW and then trapped his friend by reversing the car into him on a Bradford garage forecourt has been jailed for 14 months.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Imaar Rashid, 22, and Zeyn Awan, 20, went to Vishnu Patel’s house in Bradford on May 13, 2016, after seeing his car for sale on Gumtree for £3,500.
Prosecutor Howard Shaw said that during an agreed test drive, the trio got out of the car on Spencer Road in Lidget Green.
As Awan said to Rashid “let’s go back to the house”, he replied: “No, let’s just do it here.” At that point, the pair, with Rashid driving, jumped into the car and drove off.
Mr Patel grabbed hold of the passenger seat of the car and managed to hold on for around five seconds before falling to the floor, suffering cuts and bruises.
Police later saw the pair filling the car with petrol at a nearby garage and as Awan was being arrested, Rashid jumped into the passenger seat and reversed the car into him, trapping him against another vehicle.
Rashid, of Brantwood Grove, Heaton, Bradford, admitted charges of theft and dangerous driving. He also pleaded guilty to an assault occasioning actual bodily harm, relating to an incident on February 29, 2016, when he broke the jaw of a 15 year-old boy outside a school in Heaton by punching and kicking him.
Awan, of Haworth Grove, Heaton, Bradford, admitted charges of theft and the possession of an offensive weapon.
After hearing that he was earning £500 a week by working in his father’s fabric business, the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, fined Amar £1,000 and jailed him for 12 months, suspended for a year.
He said: “You’re working hard, keeping out of trouble, I want you to continue to do that. Don’t come back.”
John Batchelor, mitigating for Rashid, said his client had “grown up” since the offences, getting married and taking a job as a waiter in a family business in Wakefield.
He argued for any jail term to be suspended, but Judge Durham Hall told Rashid: “You left Mr Patel clinging to his car for dear life as you drove off. You hurt the owner, and you clearly intended to steal the car.”
Rashid was also banned from driving for two years.
