A Turkish restaurant is under attack as witnesses report heavy gunfire, a police spokesman has said.

Security forces have been deployed in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, after an attack was reported.

Government sources revealed 17 people had died in the attack with a further eight wounded.

Soldiers are on the scene with armoured vehicles as they launch an operation against suspected jihadists in the city.

The shooting began shortly after 9pm local time on Sunday in Ouagadougou’s city centre.

Two locations, the Hotel Bravia and nearby Istanbul Restaurant, appear to have been at the epicentre of the attack.
