Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed his intrigue over the decision not to send Harry Kane off in their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

The Magpies saw Jonjo Shelvey given a red card early in the second half for treading on Dele Alli’s ankle, which the Spanish boss concedes was fair.

But Benitez has questioned referee Andre Marriner’s decision to only hand Kane a yellow card for a strong challenge on summer signing Florian Lejeune, which saw the player leave the pitch injured.

He told Sky Sports: “What I would say is [Shelvey] made a mistake. Hopefully he will learn from that.

“He knows he has made a mistake and he has apologised but it changes nothing now.

“Still I would like to see if this is a more dangerous situation than the tackle from behind to Lejeune. What is worse, what is a red card? But it’s no excuses because we made a mistake and that’s it.”
