Mum’s horror as glass shopping centre roof falls on baby

A mum has spoken of the “horrific” moment the glass roof of a Merseyside shopping centre shattered and fell on her young family, covering her eight-week-old baby.

Danielle Wallace says she was walking through the Marble Place Shopping Centre on Chapel Street in Southport at about 10.30am this morning with her partner and three children when she heard “something like really loud rain hitting the roof”.

It was at this point the family looked up, only for the glass roof of the attraction to “start coming down” on top of them.

The 25-year-old says her eight-week-old baby Albie was “absolutely covered in glass”, her partner Sam had cuts to his leg and she suffered a wound to her hand.

She said the people who own a nearby cafe grabbed the family, which included Frankie, two, and Logan, six, to pull them to safety while glass continued to fall.

Danielle, who is from Stockton-on-Tees but came to Southport for a family holiday, told the ECHO: “It was like something out of a horror movie.

“It was so scary.

“The cracking noise just got louder and louder and then the roof just started falling down.

“Albie was covered in glass – it was in his hair and on his face. We had to throw out the seat he was in because the shards were everywhere.

“While we stood in the cafe the glass just kept falling and falling – you could hear it hitting the floor.”

The mum-of-three says a manager then came and “quickly got them out of the building” – which is due to be demolished to make way for a major new hotel complex.

The shopping centre was closed for the rest of the day after the incident.

Danielle added: “We were so lucky. We only went in to grab some breakfast because we were going into Liverpool for the day.

“Albie doesn’t have a scratch on him but it was horrific.”

Danielle, who is due to return home on Monday, said the incident didn’t ruin her holiday but wanted to alert people to what had happened.

The ECHO was unable to contact Marble Place Shopping Centre, however our colleagues at the Southport Visiter spoke to a representative earlier on Sunday to ask why it was closed and they declined to comment.
