Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho refused to get carried away with his side’s performance in their 4-0 win against West Ham.

The Red Devils romped to victory on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season with a clinical performance at Old Trafford.

New signings Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic enjoyed debuts to remember, with Lukaku bagging two goals on his first outing at the Theatre of Dreams.

But having watched his side struggle to overcome dogged opponents last season at home, Mourinho drew most pleasure from watching his side make their dominance count.

“The fact we won the match was the most important thing. Because many times last season we deserved to win and we didn’t,” Mourinho told talksPORT.

“I think the quality of our performance [and] our confidence levels were really high.

“I’m not going to say our performance was perfect – because it wasn’t perfect – we made mistakes and there is room for improvement, it was a solid performance.

“I liked the attitude in the second half. Winning 1-0, come into the game and trying to score more goals.

“After 2-0, we relaxed a little bit and it was a period where Slaven [Bilic] brought [Diafra] Sakho [on] and they created a couple of situations in the box.

“But then again, [we had] good stability, good confidence levels – desire to play until the end – it was good, really good.”

United travel to Swansea for their next fixture and will hope to build on an opening weekend victory which sees them sit at the top of the table.
