Man taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Usk in Newport

A man was taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Usk in Newport city centre.

Emergency services were called to the incident next to Usk Way around 8.30am on Sunday.

A spokesman for Chepstow Coastguard said: “We were called to reports of a male in the water.”

He confirmed that police, fire and ambulance all attended the incident.

The man was recovered from the water by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service .

A spokeswoman for the fire service said about 22 crew members and five appliances were sent to the scene.

The casualty was handed to the ambulance service and the incident was resolved by 8.55am.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “The man was extricated from the water.”

He confirmed the casualty was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital by ambulance.
