Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Euston will have a BOOZE BAN on Sunday night

Virgin Trains has banned alcohol on a number of its services from Manchester to London on Sunday – in a bid to quell potential trouble from football fans.

There will be seven ‘dry trains’ during the evening, following Manchester United’s clash with West Ham at Old Trafford .

The banning order is backed by a by-law – meaning those who flout it could be barred from travel.

A Virgin Trains spokeswoman said the no-booze rule had come from British Transport Police as the new Premier League season begins.

Posters to be displayed at Piccadilly read: “There will be no alcohol permitted on any Virgin Trains services departing Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston between 6pm and 9pm.

“Taking, or attempting to take alcohol onto our trains or platforms during this time will be an offence. Please do not try to bring alcohol on board.”

In a section of the poster headlined ‘The Legal Stuff’, passengers are told it’s an ‘offence under By-law 4 of the West coast Trains Limited railways By-laws for any person travelling on the services listed above to be in possession of intoxicating liquor to attempt to enter any of the above trains or platforms with intoxicating liquor’.

Anyone who’s caught flouting the rule could be barred from travel

The little known ‘By-law 4’ dictates that ‘an authorised person’ may ‘require him to leave the railway’ if they flout the law.

They may also ‘prevent them entering or remaining on the railway until an authorised person is satisfied that he has no intoxicating liquor with him and/or is no longer in an unfit condition’.

Sunday’s match will kick off at 4pm, with fans expected to make their way back down south in their thousands after full time.

The M.E.N. has contacted the British Transport Police for comment.
