Championship round-up: Aston Villa fall to Cardiff, Hull punish Burton and Nottingham Forest win goal-filled thriller

Barnsley 1-2 Ipswich Town

Ipswich came from a goal down to beat Barnsley as new man Martyn Waghorn scored the winner on his debut.

Tom Bradshaw opened for the home side before David McGoldrick equalised for Mick McCarthy’s men in the second half.

But former Rangers man Waghorn had the final say as he plundered in a winner 20 minutes from the end.

Birmingham 2-1 Bristol City

Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham responded after conceding early on to claim the three points at St Andrews.

Lee Johnson’s men enjoyed a dream start as Bobby Reid scored within the first two minutes.

However, Craig Gardner and Jacques Maghoma were the boys in blue to grab the home side’s goals as Bristol City failed to build on their opening day win.

Brentford 3-4 Nottingham Forest

Dean Smith’s Brentford fell to Mark Warburton’s Forest in a goal-filled game at Griffin Park.

John Egan headed the home side ahead before Andreas Bouchalakis and Daryl Murphy gave Forest a 2-1 lead going into the half time break.

Bouchalakis and Kieran Dowell added two more for the away side to see them take the win despite goals from Brentford’s Andreas Bjelland and Neal Maupay.

Cardiff City 3-0 Aston Villa

Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa are still waiting to kick into gear after a Nathaniel Mendez-Laing double helped Cardiff City triumph 3-0.

Former Blackburn man Junior Hoilett grabbed the other Bluebirds goal as Neil Warnock’s side claimed an impressive three points.

Derby County 0-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves sealed victory away to Derby as they continue to impress following their eye-catching transfer business.

A first half strike from Douglas and Cavaleiro’s goal 14 minutes from time was enough for Nuno’s side to take the win.

Hull City 4-1 Burton Albion

Leonid Slutsky sealed his first league win as Hull boss thanks to Abel Hernandez’s hat-trick.

Kamil Grosicki grabbed Hull’s other goal with Burton’s strike coming courtesy of Jackson Irvine.

Leeds United 0-0 Preston North End

Neither Leeds nor Preston could find a way through as both Thomas Christiansen and Alex Neil had to settle for a point each.

Preston’s Ben Pearson saw red on the hour mark, after a second yellow card, but the home side were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage.

Millwall 1-1 Bolton Wanderers

It was a point apiece as two of the newly-promoted sides faced each other at the Den.

George Saville put Millwall a goal up four minutes after the half time break but Filipe Morais equalised for Bolton in the 62nd minute.

Reading 1-1 Fulham

On-loan Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas lasted just 39 seconds for Fulham as the 24-year-old saw red within the first minute.

Liam Kelly netted for Jaap Stam’s side in the 61st minute but another Chelsea loanee, Lucas Piazon, equalised with eight minutes remaining.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Queens Park Rangers

Jamie Mackie put Ian Holloway’s side ahead after 23 minutes as QPR looked for back-to-back wins.

However, Sam Winnall’s equaliser handed Sheffield Wednesday their first point of the new season.
